Earthquake felt by thousands across North Island

A deep 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Tauranga last night and was felt throughout the North Island.

More than 11,000 people, some in the upper South Island, have reported feeling the shake on the GeoNet website. Most described it as 'weak' or 'light'.

The quake at 10.47pm yesterday was centred 30 kilometres east of Tauranga - not far from Whakaari/White Island - at a depth of 257km.
