KiwiRail says it will do whatever it can to keep the Capital Connection train service running.
Patronage on the commuter service between Palmerston North and Wellington has fallen by 10% since other commuter trains began servicing Paraparaumu and Waikanae in February.
A Kiwirail spokesperson Tom Evers-Swindell says the company is losing hundreds of dollars a day and needs another 40 passengers each day to break even.
He says attempts will be made to attract more passengers from the Levin area, as well as possibly adding a stop at Porirua.
Mr Evers-Swindell says KiwiRail will not give up on the Capital Connection and will review how the service is performing at Easter.
