Strike action suspended in Wallis and Futuna

12:54 pm on 28 December 2018

Senior public servants in Wallis and Futuna have suspended their strike after 16 weeks.

Their union and the administration have signed a tentative agreement after the overseas ministry set up a committee to look into their demands.

The strikers wanted to be integrated into the French public service under the so-called Sauvadet law.

They have gone back to work but a strike continues of the territorial guards who also seek better recognition.

Still on strike are also the territory's firefighters.

According to the public broadcaster there is hope for an improvement in the situation next month when a new French prefect will take over.
