A scrub fire that threatened homes on Kawau Island in the Hauraki Gulf last night has been put out.
Nine homes were evacuated after the fire broke out in Vivian Bay at about 7.30pm.
Fire Service shift manager Paul Radden said at one point it came within 30 metres of a house but it was out now, and residents had been able to return home.
Further north, one home remains evacuated because of a scrub fire near Pipiwai north-west of Whangarei.
At least 200 square metres of pine forest has been damaged, and Mr Radden said the fire was not yet fully under control.
