Big Day Out 2015 cancelled

After making a successful comeback in New Zealand this year, the Big Day Out has been cancelled across Australasia for 2015.

But promoter Campbell Smith said on Twitter the event – a cornerstone of the festival scene in Australia and New Zealand – would return.

Big Day Out on hiatus for 2015. A real shame for Auckland and NZ after an awesome 2014 gig, but we will be back. #BDONZ #westernsprings

The Big Day Out was held at the new venue of Western Springs Stadium this year, after it was cancelled in 2013 because of low crowd numbers the previous year.

It was headlined by Pearl Jam, Snoop Dogg and Arcade Fire, and attracted near sell-out crowd numbers of more than 40,000, despite the last-minute pullout of one of the headline acts, Blur.

Joe Nunweek live-blogged the event for The Wireless in January, and gave the new venue and refreshed festival a positive review: “I came away beaming anyway. Here’s to several more.”

The Big Day Out was first held in New Zealand in 1994.
