Prisoner to seek costs over cellphone charger in cell

14:46 pm on 16 February 2009

Prisoner Arthur William Taylor says he will seek court costs if the Court of Appeal upholds a decision over a disciplinary charge involving a cell phone charger found in his cell.

Taylor, who is serving a 12-year sentence at Auckland Prison, appeared at the Court of Appeal in Auckland on Monday.

The Corrections Department is appealing against a High Court decision in May when a judge overturned the result of a prison discipline charge against Taylor relating to the charger.

In October 2007, the charger was found in his briefcase in his cell. Prisoners are not allowed to have chargers.

Taylor withdrew an application for a bail hearing, leaving only the civil appeal by the department.

He told the court he would seek court costs to pay for a lawyer he initially hired.

Judgment has been reserved.
