MediaWorks chief executive Cam Wallace is stepping down and will start an undisclosed new role in the middle of the year.

He joined the company, which owns several commercial radio stations, in January 2021 after 19 years with Air New Zealand.

An internal announcement from MediaWorks chairperson Wayne Stevenson confirmed Wallace would leave in the coming weeks "having supported the business through its most challenging period".

Last month, the company announced a plan to axe up to 90 staff in a bid to cut costs.

Stevenson thanked Wallace for leading the MediaWorks team to navigate the pandemic and support the business in its efforts to drive cultural change.

"I have personally valued his friendship and his genuine passion for the sector and I know his enthusiasm and energy for our business and its people will be sorely missed."

Wendy Palmer will be the interim chief executive before a permanent replacement is recruited in the coming months.

The recruitment process has started.

MediaWorks owns several commercial radio stations including More FM, The Breeze and Today FM.
