The head of the students association at the University of Guam says a series of proposed hikes to tuition fees is alarming to students who are already struggling financially.
The University hopes to generate 1.3 million dollars through increases in tuition costs, to help it offset a predicted budget shortfall of 3.2 million dollars in next year's budget.
It is planning increases of ten percent in spring, five percent in autumn 2012 with another five percent in autumn 2013.
The President of the Student Government Association Jesse Quenga says on average, students face an increase of 500 US dollars.
"These are individuals who are working three jobs to try to pay off their tuition, who are single mothers, who are deployed soldiers trying their best, that on the time they're given while home, they make towards education."
Jesse Quenga says he hopes the university can find more ways to cut costs, for example reducing the funding for duplicate research projects.
