Call for Parihaka Day renewed

06:38 am on 3 November 2011

There is a fresh call to change Guy Fawkes night to Parihaka Day.

Calls to change 5 November to Parihaka Day have been around for a number of years and earlier this year the Maori Party pushed for it in Parliament.

There are renewed calls this year on the 130th anniversary of the invasion of the Taranaki settlement of Parihaka on Saturday.

The invasion in 1881 resulted in the village being destroyed. Women and girls were raped and the leaders Tohu Kakahi and Te Whiti o Rongomai were arrested.

Premier John Hall had tried to negotiate to buy the land, but his offers were declined, so the government used legislation to confiscate it.

His great grandson Peter John Hall says he is continuing to push for Parihaka Day so New Zealanders learn the history of Te Whiti and John Hall.

He says the Mana of Maori was damaged and land confiscated, while Pakeha wanted the land to get them out of debts caused by the railway system in New Zealand.
