A piece of plastic became tangled in a transmission line and the company had to turn off the power supply to safely remove it.

Power was out for about four hours, affecting 27,000 households and businesses.

Transpower spokesperson Mark Ryall apologised to customers but told Checkpoint compensation was an issue for people to take up with their electricity retailers.

"The Coromandel area on our network is supplied by a twin transmission line, two circuits. Unfortunately, the plastic that was wrapped around both those circuits.

"Supply through the Coromandel along that line is very reliable."

Ryall said Transpower was talking to the market garden landowner where the plastic blew from.

He would not say what the outcome would be, but did not rule out compensation to Transpower.
