Eight crews tried to put out the fire on a steep hillside at Cape Palliser late last night, but had to stand down when night fell.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said two crews monitored the scene overnight.

Northerly winds gusting up to 65-kilometres an hour are likely to fan the flames today, and dry conditions aren't helping either.
