Police said they were alerted around midday.

Senior Constable Les Andrew said the man, who is from Wanaka and in his 40s, was part of a guided tour when the avalanche hit.

The man has injuries to his ribs and pelvis and has been flown by helicopter to Christchurch Hospital where he is in a stable condition, he said.

Mr Andrew said the man's injuries were now classed as minor.

He said the injured man managed to walk himself to the rescue helicopter.

No one else was injured.

It comes after five climbers were hit by an avalanche in the same area on Tuesday.

New Zealand Avalanche advisory said there is currently considerable risk of an avalanche on the mountain in all areas above 1200 metres.
