Opposition leads Labor in latest poll

15:00 pm on 2 February 2010

The latest Newspoll in The Australian newspaper says the Coalition leads Labor in the primary vote standings for the first time since the election.

The poll shows the Coalition's primary vote at 41% to Labor's 40%.

After preferences, Labor leads 52% to 48%, a narrower margin than a fortnight ago when the gap was 6%.

Kevin Rudd leads Tony Abbott as the preferred prime minister by 58% to 26%.

The ABC reports Mr Abbott says the results are encouraging, but there is a long way to go.

Mr Rudd says there is no doubt Labor will have to fight hard to win this year's election.
