Previously only people from Guadalcanal Province were eligible for the Canadian International Training & Education Corporation programme (CITREC).

The scheme offers applicants Canadian standard education and training in agriculture, tourism and hospitality and possible seasonal employment in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.

The Island Sun newspaper reported participation in the programme was not cheap but successful applicants were all but guaranteed a job placement.

Through the programme more than 50 Solomon Islanders have jobs and are now working in Canada on short and long term visas.

At least 150 more workers are needed, the report said.

CITREC is also working on establishing a system to enable tradespeople to submit their credentials and work experience for evaluation against Canadian standards.
