Govt to review new taxi technologies

17:53 pm on 20 January 2015

The Government is reviewing the rules under which taxis and private hire car services operate.

Associate transport minister Craig Foss said the review will focus on whether the rules adequately cover the use of new technologies, such as apps used for booking vehicles.

Mr Foss said a range of taxi companies and hire car services, including Uber, provide booking apps.

He said they are broadly compatible with the current law as long as there is a clear distinction between a taxi and a private hire service.

Mr Foss said he met with representatives of the taxi and hire care industries late last year and there are a range of views that need to be taken into account in the review. He expected it to be completed by the middle of the year.
