The future of the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre in Rotorua is looking more hopeful, thanks to a $4.5 million boost.
Sir Owen Glenn has announced he will donate $3 million for a proposed building upgrade, while the Rotorua Trust has agreed to contribute $1.5 million.
The building was closed in November until further notice, after a seismic assessment found it was below the required standards.
Rotorua District Council said proposed upgrades for the building were dependent on external funding.
Rotorua mayor Stevie Chadwick said the financial support was fantastic.
She said the centre was important.
"The centre has been important to our community and we can't be without a facility like this long term. We want to be able to settle on
an option as soon as possible and get things underway as quickly as possible."
Ms Chadiwck said this support might help secure extra funding.
"This early support will help boost efforts to secure other funding. I'll look forward to expressing our gratitude to both Sir Owen and
Rotorua Trust personally. Their support is very much appreciated."
