The Queensland Police Service is to be presented with two traditional Maori cloaks to acknowledge the good relationship it has with Maori communities in parts of the state particularly in Logan, near Brisbane.
The Tutahi Tonu consultative committee was formed in 2008 in an effort to bridge a link between Maori and the police to work together on projects including recruitment campaigns.
Senior Constable Brenda Cookson of Ngati Kuri descent, who works for Queensland Police and the committee, says two korowai will be gifted in a ceremony in October and will cement the positive connections that have been made.
She says one korowai will be for Maori police officers to wear during ceremonial events, and the other one will be on show to display the partnership they have with Maori.
Senior Constable Cookson says the initiative has wide support including from the Cultural Advisory Unit, the New Zealand police, and also the New Zealand Consul General in Australia.
She says the presentation will take place at the end of October and will bring the Maori community together during a powhiri and handing over ceremony.
