Importing rules to be reviewed

19:40 pm on 16 December 2011

The Government is launching an independent review of importing rules to find out how the kiwifruit vine disease, PSA, entered the country.

The review will look at the current importing rules, how they were developed, decision making relating to them and what should happen in the future.

Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry director general, Wayne McNee, says the bacteria has been discovered in the pollen of unopened flowers, which the kiwifruit industry was permitted to import at the time of the outbreak.

There appears to have been no internationally published science then that indicated pollen was able to spread PSA.

The independent review follows a series of investigations by MAF since the outbreak of PSA in Bay of Plenty orchards.
