A vehicle being chased by police crashed into a fence and caused a fire in Hamilton East on Monday morning.

Police said the vehicle failed to stop after they were called to a potential firearms sighting in Forest Lake, in the city's west, just after 11am.

"The vehicle then rammed a police car and subsequently fled, to which police initiated a pursuit."

The vehicle was stopped with a "tactical manoeuvre", police said, before it crashed into a fence on Brooklyn Rd, in the eastern suburb of Claudelands, causing a "minor fire".

The road was blocked, police urging motorists to avoid the area.

The suspect was arrested.
