Solomons province plans to ban loggers from Ngella island

The Central Province of Solomon Islands is planning to ban logging from its Ngella islands.

Its premier Patrick Vasuni says this is because it suspects trees are being over-harvested.

Mr Vasuni says his office is requesting a survey of logging activity in Ngella be conducted by the Ministry of Environment.

He says proof of over-harvesting is the only way his government can legally ban logging in the islands.

Patrick Vasuni says there are four logging companies operating in the Ngella group and two more are seeking logging licenses.
