A woman was followed and dragged to the ground in an assault in a south Auckland park.

Police are looking for a man, who was wearing an all-black Nike outfit, so he can "be held accountable".

The assault happened about 6.40am on January 18 at Ōtara Creek Reserve.

Detective sergeant James Mapp of Counties Manukau East criminal investigation branch said a woman was jogging down East Tamaki Rd when she noticed a man walking towards her.

She turned into an entrance of the reserve off East Tamaki Rd.

"This man followed her into the park, before running towards her and dragging her to the ground," Mapp said.

Fortunately, the woman did not suffer any injuries, he said.

"She was very shaken by what happened in the reserve that morning, and we have ensured there is support for her."

The man took her phone and bank cards before running away from East Tamaki Rd.

Mapp said a man had been caught on video in the area at the time of the assault, and anyone who recognised him should contact police.

The man was wearing black clothing with Nike branding in gold or yellow. His shoes were also black and had Nike branding.

"Violence like this has no place in our community and I'm asking the public to assist our investigation so this man can be held accountable," Mapp said.

"There will be people in our community who know who this man is and recognise the outfit he's wearing.

"They need to do the right thing and contact police so we can speak with him."
