16:37 pm on 18 December 2009

A high-tech ship has begun laying a submarine fiber optic cable in the Marshall Islands that will revolutionise communications in the area.

The Tyco Durable cable vessel is in Majuro and will launch the link out of the capital, Majuro, tomorrow.

The General Manager of the Marshall Islands National Telecommunications Authority, Tony Muller, says a link has already been laid to the U.S. Army's missile testing range in Kwajalein.

The cable is to tie the Marshalls via Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia to Guam.

According to Mr Muller, the cable is on track for being in service by April.
