Livestock being culled at Fukushima

06:08 am on 13 May 2011

Japan is to start culling thousands of cattle and other livestock in the 20km evacuation zone around the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant.

Farmers had to abandon their animals and poultry when the tsunami on 11 March knocked out cooling systems at the plant.

An estimated 10,000 cows have starved to death in the sheds where they were held.

Footage from inside the zone before it was sealed off showed abandoned cows running in small herds across empty roads and along river banks, and dogs and other pets begging for food.
