Qiliho suspends nine Fiji police officers

15:54 pm on 8 February 2016

Nine Fiji policemen have been suspended in relation to the death of Vilikesa Soko who died after being in police custody in 2014.

Several of them had been earlier reinstated by the acting police chief Sitiveni Qiliho after his predecessor Ben Groenewald suspended them ahead of court proceedings.

Mr Qiliho told a press conference in Suva this morning the nine officers were suspended on full pay yesterday after his discussions with the Director of Public Prosecutions.

On Friday the DPP, Christopher Pryde, said he was extremely concerned a number of the accused officers had been reinstated to the force.

He said it was unacceptable and represented a real risk of interference with investigations.

According to FBC News Mr Qiliho said the nine men will remain suspended until all legal proceedings have been completed.

After their earlier reinstatement, two of the men Manasa Talala and Viliami Vereivalu were involved with the investigation into the former deputy police commissioner, Henry Brown.
