09:38 am on 7 August 2004

Police in Papua New Guinea have arrested the leader of an opposition party for allegedly attempting to bribe a member of the government.

The United Resources Party, Tim Neville, was arrested yesterday and charged with offering bribes to the MP Carlos Yuni.

Mr Yuni has accused Neville of offering him the equivalent of about US$1,500 to defect to the Opposition.

The Port Moresby police commander Tony Wagambie denied police had received direct instructions from the government to arrest Neville.

Neville, who is the governor of Milne Bay province, was placed in a police cell before his lawyer secured bail.

The Boroko District Court will sit on Monday to examine the case again.
