A 24-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly stole petrol, evaded police for hours and attempted a carjack in Upper Hutt.
Police say the man left a petrol station in Pahiatua about 4.30pm without paying for petrol.
An attempt was made to stop his car but police did not pursue due to excessive speed.
Road spikes were then deployed three times, as the man drove across the Remutaka range.
The third lot stopped the car near Māoribank, when it collided with another car.
Police say the male driver left on foot, then allegedly attempted to carjack another vehicle before being Tasered, pepper-sprayed and arrested.
A spokesperson said the man will appear in Hutt Valley District Court tomorrow on dangerous driving charges.
