A former Nauru cabinet minister, Godfrey Thoma, has been elected the new speaker of parliament.
He replaces Ludwig Scotty who resigned last week.
Mr Thoma, who is the second longest serving MP in Nauru, was one of two nominee, defeating Baron Waqa by two votes in the 18-seat house.
The legislature, which has been fractured into several groupings for the past two months, has now been adjourned until tomorrow.
