Fiji tourism expect modest growth from New Zealand market

The marketing director Fiji's Visitors Bureau, Joe Tuamoto, says he doesn't expect the growth in tourist numbers from New Zealand this year to match last year's record.

He says last year visitor numbers from all countries grew 10 percent to 430,000.

That's 20,000 higher than the previous highest of 409,000 just before the May 2000 coup.

New Zealanders made up a significant part of that growth, but Mr Tuamoto says while the strong New Zealand dollar is working to Fiji's advantage, he still doesn't expect the same level of growth this year.

"But in 2004 because we are having some difficulties with rooms during the peak season we have just a very conservative estimate about a four to five percent increase out of New Zealand."
