Pay equality to be tested

12:40 pm on 10 December 2012

A Wellington woman is taking legal action against her employer, Terranova Homes & Care, in an attempt to establish pay equality.

Kristine Bartlett has worked at Riverleigh Rest Home in Lower Hutt for 19 years and is paid $14.46 per hour.

Ms Bartlett claims her hourly wage is less than what would be paid to male employees doing work of equal value and is a breach of the Equal Pay Act and the Employment Relations Act.

Service & Food Workers Union national secretary John Ryall said Ms Barlett is a very experienced worker and the rate she is being paid is outrageous.
