Drivers on Futuna encouraged to get a licence

20:13 pm on 12 April 2006

Drivers on Futuna had to comply with their first ever police traffic check last week.

French police launched the operation after they found out that about 80 percent of motorists had never had a driving licence.

Most of the drivers without a license received a first warning only, and police have set up free public lessons twice a week.

The control operation was reported as going well, with most car and moped drivers complying with the police check.
