Doctors offering telehealth services are being warned to gain clear understanding of their patients' medical histories before prescribing treatments.
The Medical Council has issued new guidelines for the consultations by phone or video call.
The guidelines include a ban on prescribing controlled drugs for the first time to patients who have not been appropriately assessed, or do not have a regular doctor; and ensuring doctors know when a physical examination is needed.
Medical Council chairperson Curtis Walker said telehealth consultations had become increasingly common since the Covid-19 pandemic began.
The council is working with medical schools, district health boards, and telehealth specialists to ensure doctors have appropriate skills and training about using technology to deliver care.
