Tahiti opposition hopes for UN visit to help with decolonisation

French Polynesia's pro-independence movement says it hopes France will at last allow a UN mission to visit Tahiti to assess the aftermath of France's nuclear weapons tests.

In 2013, the UN General Assembly reinscribed the French territory on its decolonisation list but unlike in the case of New Caledonia, France has shunned the world body's involvement.

Walter Zweifel asked a French Polynesian assembly member and former French senator Richard Tuheiava how long ago the UN was invited.
