Lab 'not aware' patient was gay

A blood testing lab that has been accused of being prejudiced against a gay man says it had no idea of his sexual orientation.

The man had a blood test at a laboratory at St George's Hospital in Christchurch after a dental assistant was injured with a needle during root canal work earlier.

He was then required to fill out forms that identified him as either the recipient of the potential blood contamination, or the source.

Southern Community Laboratories says the man took offence when he was told he needed to fill out the form identifying him as the source.

He said it was because of his sexual orientation, but SCL chief executive Peter Gootjes says that was not the case.

The incident happened in July this year and Mr Gootjes says there has not been any kind of official complaint.
