Housing New Zealand has asked the Whangārei District Council to publicly notify a proposal for the controversial Puriri Park social housing development.

The plan - for 37 homes and apartments on the park in the Whangārei suburb of Maunu - has provoked opposition from local residents.

The residents said the high-density development was out of keeping with its surrounds and turned out in force to a recent council meeting demanding a say.

Housing New Zealand said it had asked for public notification to speed up the process and give residents a chance to state their case, but it still expected consent would be granted.

Whangārei mayor Sheryl Mai said she believed the residents should be heard, and was relieved Housing New Zealand had asked for that to happen.
