Contentious school name heads for vote

10:39 am on 12 December 2012

People in a small Bay of Plenty township are going to the ballot box to settle a squabble over the naming of a school.

Some residents of Murupara are objecting to a new area kura being called Te Awatea o Murupara.

A 200-strong petition was drawn up and a hui was called where the Establishment Board of Trustees apologised for what it calls any hurt and pain that it might have caused.

It acknowledged the community needs to have a bigger say on naming the school.

Board chairman Jacob Te Kurapa says the ballot box will be held at a police station and vote counting will be done by Justices of the Peace from outside Murupara.

He says four names are on the ballot paper. They are: Murupara School and Collegiate, Murupara Area School, Te Pa Harakeke o Murupara and Te Awatea o Murupara. Voting closes on Saturday.
