A person found wounded in a car after a series of gunshots in Auckland's Pakuranga has died, police say.
Armed police amassed at the intersection of Marvon Downs Avenue and Pixie Place about 6.45am on Monday after reports of gunfire.
Officers found a person injured in a car.
"The were attended to by medical services, but sadly have died at the scene," police said in a statement.
A neighbour, who did not want to be named, told RNZ he heard between five and 10 separate shots from what sounded like a single gun.
Police said they would have a heavy presence in the area throughout the day.
An officer told RNZ they had been knocking on doors and gathering video footage in the Pakuranga Heights area.
Both Marvon Downs Avenue and Pixie Place were cordoned off. A Pixie Pl resident said they were allowed to leave their home at around 2pm, but only on foot.
A resident of Marvon Downs Avenue, who did not want to be named said they heard two loud bangs one or two nights ago. They said it sounded like gunshots rather than fireworks.
A local school principal said there was a strong police presence in the area as police dealt with an incident.
Elm Park School said there was no immediate danger to the school but the police activity could may disrupt access.
The school had been "fully assured" it could stay open, the principal said.
