American Samoa gets hyperbaric chamber

American Samoa now has a hyperbaric chamber, the first in the South Pacific.

The chamber, which is funded by the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, was unveiled at the LBJ Hospital.

The chamber is located temporarily in the Pediatric Clinic until a permanent clinic is built.

The chamber will treat divers with the bends and patients with other conditions, including diabetes.

The Department of Interior awarded the hospital 600,000 US dollars to build the hyperbaric wound care clinic.

Hyperbaric oxygen treatments can increase the speed of injury healing for diabetics, which would help prevent amputations.
