Anti-mining group appealing against ruling

11:27 am on 12 September 2012

An anti-mining lobby group is filing notice of an appeal on Wednesday after it lost a High Court challenge to a coal mine on the West Coast.

Bathurst Resources, an Australian company, wants to mine on the Stockton Denniston Plateau near Westport.

The application was opposed by West Coast Environment Network, which argued climate change issues should be taken into account before a resource consent is granted.

Both the Environment Court and the High Court ruled against the group, but the Environment Network is now taking its case to the Court of Appeal. It says climate change must be considered.
