Push to streamline NZ-Australia travel

Australia's key tourism body wants to encourage more New Zealand visitors by making it cheaper and quicker to cross the Tasman.

Its Tourism and Transport Forum has put forward a range of reforms to the Australian government, including simplifying formalities at the border.

The forum suggests cutting the travel time from New Zealand to Australia by streamlining check-in, customs and quarantine procedures.

It also proposes opening more regional airports to trans-Tasman flights.

The forum's acting chief executive, Trent Zimmerman, says the aim is to make the trip to Australia feel more like a domestic service.
