Problems were discovered during regular overnight testing on Wednesday, Wellington City Council said.

Further testing is being carried out, with help from the overseas manufacturer.

Wellington Cable Car chief executive Simon Fleisher said the problem related to acceleration and braking.

However, the brakes had not failed, he said.

"We have found just some minor discrepancies both in terms of acceleration and the acceleration speeds and also braking distances.

"So we just want to make sure that... we align with our certified standards under the Railways Act," he said.

The cable car should get the green light to go again this weekend.
