A man is in a serious but stable condition following surgery after being shot by police in Kaiapoi, Canterbury, last night.
Officers were called to Williams Street near the intersection with Ohoka Road just before half past seven last night, where a man with a metal bar and knife was alleged to have threatened a member of the public.
The officers allege the man attacked their car with the metal bar, before making off on foot.
Police say they unsuccessfully tried to subdue the agitated man before opening fire.
Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price said a Taser and pepper spray were used several times to no avail.
Price said the police then fired several shots as the man moved towards them.
The man has undergone surgery and is now in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
A critical incident investigation is underway and the Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified.
Police are asking the public for any CCTV or cellphone footage they may have of the incident.
