Market sources have confirmed to Radio New Zealand that Mr Hart plans to sell up to 60 percent of the building product supplier in a deal that could raise as much as $1 billion.

Graeme Hart's Rank Group bought Carter Holt Harvey nearly 10 years ago and he has been selling off parts of it ever since.

Credit Suisse First Boston and First New Zealand Capital are jointly working on the deal which is expected to hit the sharemarket in the middle of the year.
