A new study on traffic congestion has found that Auckland and Christchurch rate among the top five most congested cities in both New Zealand and Australia.
The traffic congestion index by GPS company, TomTom, has ranked Auckland as the third worst city for traffic delays, behind Sydney and Perth.
The study found Aucklanders spend an average of 40 minutes stuck in traffic for every hour they travel during peak congestion.
Christchurch drivers are also delayed by half an hour for every hour they travel during peak traffic, and the city rates as fifth on the list of the most congested cities in Australasia.
Overall, the study says New Zealanders spend up to 92 hours a year caught up in peak hour traffic.
Wellington was found to be the least congested city and the second least congested across both New Zealand and Australia.
