High winds on the East Coast have delayed the first commercial launch attempt by the country's only rocket company.

The first attempt to launch Rocket Lab's Electron into orbit from Mahia Peninsula was set down for today.

But it was only the first within a 10-day possible launch window, and an attempt is now scheduled for tomorrow.

Rocket Lab said it would only proceed if the conditions were ideal.

The company has raised well over $100 million from investors including Data Collective, based in Silicon Valley, and The Warehouse founder Sir Stephen Tindall's fund.

The test flight of the 17m rocket will be the first of three as the company gets set for commercial launches.

The company already has commercial customers, including NASA, lined up with payloads to be put into orbit.
