The American golfer, Russell Henley, has taken advantage of a final round collapse by the overnight leader, Rory McIlroy, to win the Honda Classic in a playoff.

McIlroy held a two shot lead going into the final round of the Florida event, but fired a four over par 74 and needed a birdie on 18 to reach the four man playoff with Henley, Russell Knox and Ryan Palmer.

Henley birdied the first playoff hole, to earn his second PGA Tour win.

Meanwhile, the world golf number one Tiger Woods pulled out of the Honda Classic during the final round of the tournament in Palm Beach Gardens.

Woods retired after 12 holes where he was five over par for the day and even for the tournament with the 14 time major champion complaining of back spasms.
