Hong Kong protests affect arrivals in Northern Marianas

08:51 am on 1 October 2019

Chinese visitor arrivals in the Northern Marianas are down 20 percent with the market being affected by the ongoing tensions in Hong Kong.

The Marianas Visitors Authority says only about 17 thousand (17,255) Chinese visitors arrived on Saipan in August, down 1100 from the same period last year.

Because of the protests, Hong Kong Airlines and Hong Kong Express have been reducing and cancelling flights.

In addition, the rising Renminbi exchange rate relative to the US dollar is affecting Chinese travel decisions.
