Mayor calls for more action over road deaths

20:18 pm on 23 February 2015

A North Otago mayor is calling for more to be done to stop foreigners driving on the wrong side of the road.

Five-year-old Ruby Marris from Oamaru was killed and the rest of her family seriously injured when a rented ute collided with their vehicle head-on near Moeraki on Saturday.

A Chinese man appeared in the Dunedin District Court today charged over the crash.

Four other Chinese and Indian tourists appeared in Queenstown District Court today and pleaded guilty to dangerous driving over the weekend.

Waitaki District Mayor Gary Kircher said the problem was growing.

"Particularly the problem is where that tourism is coming from and when ... [the] majority of countries drive on the opposite side of the road to us - as you get more tourism from those countries you do get more situations where these incidents are going to happen."

Mr Kircher said the Government needed to do more, including painting more arrows on roads, and so did local councils.
