New Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke is under pressure in Australia to deliver some form of protection for the koala.

The Australian Koala Foundation says there are as few as 43,000 koalas are left and the species must be listed as "vulnerable". It says there is no time to waste.

The ABC reports the koala currently has no protection under national laws.
