A replacement for the Lower Hokitika Gorge suspension bridge - which has been closed since October - could be completed by the middle of summer.
The old 42-metre long walking bridge over the Hokitika River is a big tourist attraction, but has been closed for months.
A builder is expected to be chosen by the end of the month.
A tender document shows work is expected to begin in October and end in late January.
It has been budgeted at $500,000, mostly from a central government tourism fund.
