Decision on former Australian PM's appointment to ICC to be made today

14:22 pm on 30 June 2010

The International Cricket Council is meeting in Singapore today to decide if former Australian prime minister John Howard will ultimately assume its presidency.

If successful, Howard will be vice-president for two years and then assume the ICC presidency.

Howard is the joint nomination of Australia and New Zealand for the vice-presidency but needs votes from seven of the 10 Test playing nations to be elected vice-president.

What is usually a formality appointment has become uncertain as Zimbabwe and South Africa have questioned his suitability for the role following his hardline stance against Robert's Mugabe regime in Zimbabwe.
